FAQ
From UDB
[edit] Frequently Asked Questions
- What is UDB?
UDB is a database for the MaNGOS MMORPG server. The server only comes with a basic schema to allow it to run. You have to use a database, such as UDB, populated with data, if you want to fully test the server.
- Where did UDB come from?
UDB started as a merge of MoDB and SDB data. With each update pack, a lot of that old data is getting replaced. Eventually we will just be "UDB".
- How often do you update your database?
Sometimes it takes a week, sometimes a month.
- What is "blizz like"?
UDB is attempting to replicate the Blizzard world for World of Warcraft. The term "blizz like" means that it is close enough to being a replication of what is on the official Blizzard servers.
- Why doesn't more of UDB work?
A couple of reasons:
- Unless there is NO OTHER WAY and NEVER WILL BE, we refuse to put workarounds in the database. If the core doesn't support something yet, you can either use a different database, or live without that feature working.
- It is a big world, we try to fix as many bugs as we can when they are reported, but sometimes we miss some
- Why doesn't UDB supply MaNGOS cores?
Right now, the only copyrighted material that is in UDB is text. Quest text, gossip text, creature names, etc.. etc.. However, if Blizzard wanted to come after us (UDB) for copyright violations, they would have to go after wowhead, thottbot, alakazam, wowwiki, etc..etc... because they have the same text.
The reason we don't host binaries, or even allow links to binaries is because with JUST the database, you have nothing. It is also why we don't link to DBC extractors (a grey area).
Is it a pain in the butt -- yea. But as long as all pieces that (when combined) allow you to play a (mostly) replicated World of Warcraft environment are separate, Blizz doesn't have much of a leg to stand on legally.
If we were to have a site that you could get everything you needed to play WoW -- well -- they would have a central place (and person or persons) to come after.
